Peacefully at the Willowdale Retirement Centre, Smiths Falls on February 28, 2002. Ruby, the daughter of Isabella Longman and Silas Whale, and the widow of Arthur Simmons, was born in Goldstone, Ontario on July 23, 1910. Her family, thankful for her constant love and support, are Diane Haskins (Keith), Portland, Jack (Marilyn), Calgary, Marny McCook (Bob), Perth, and Nancy (David Chapman), Ottawa. She was a much loved grandmother to Allison Brown, Cory Haskins, Stephanie Cavanagh, Victoria Simmons, Pruyn Haskins, Emily McCook and Sarah Johnson, a great-grandmother of four; a cherished sister of Percy Whale (Marion), Elmira; and beloved aunt to her nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by sisters: Ethel, Eileen Fletcher Ferris, and brothers: Ross, Lawrence, and Allan. Her wisdom, warmth, and unfailing cheerfulness endure as gifts to all who knew her. The family wishes to pay tribute to Laura VanAlstine, Shirley Billings, Elizabeth Gort, Rose Riley, and Gladys Bullock, staff members at Willowdale for their unfailing kindness and care for a beloved mother. Friends may pay their respects at the Scotland Funeral Home, 27 Main Street, Elgin on Sunday March 3, 2002 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Celebration of her Life will be held in Portland United Church on Monday March 4, 2002 at 2 o'clock. Memorial donations to the Canadian National Institute for the Blind, Portland United Church of the A. And R. Simmons Scholarship Fund (Simpson Masonic Lodge) would be appreciated by the family.
