At the hour of Divine Mercy early Friday, March 1, 2002, in her 77th year, Doreen Catherine Surch slipped peacefully from the heart of her home to God's own heart. Doreen left a close-knit family and farming roots in Fournier, ON at the age of 16, for the big city of Ottawa. There she completed her high school course in stenography and began her career in the federal government during war-time. Her true vocation soon surfaced, however, when she met and married her beloved Norman. Full of faith and compassion, Doreen always devotedly served her family, Church and community. With Norman, she was a founding member of St. Maurice Parish, where she remained a faithful member of the Legion of Mary to her death. Until her illness, she also served many years as a volunteer at Extendicare Starwood nursing home. Predeceased by her dear husband, Norman Anthony; loving mother of Richard of Kitchener, Dale (George Balkovec), and Norma; attentive and nurturing grandmother of Jessica, Adam, (predeceased by Jonathan), Chelsea, Angela, and Joel. Doreen was ever a steadfast and caring support to her deceased parents, Emmet and Ethel Surch, and the glue bonding her siblings more closely together. Predeceased by Ray and Angela, she will be sorely missed by her surviving sisters Evelyn Fleming (Harry) and Margaret Clair (Ronald), and her sisters-in-law Teri Ghosal, Margaret Shalla, Helen O'Malley and Marie Gale. Many nieces and nephews and others in the extended family will also miss her deeply. Over the years she freely shared her loving ear and gentle wisdom with scores of friends and neighbours. Doreen and her family greatly appreciated the assistance and TLC provided by the Palliative Care Outreach Program (especially Dr. Margaret Farncombe and Caroline), VON (especially Karen), Community Care Access, and Tena from St. Elizabeth Agency. Friends may pay respects at the Kelly Funeral Home, 2313 Carling Avenue (west of Carlingwood), Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Monday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral Tuesday to St. Maurice's Church for Mass of Christian Funeral at 10:30 a.m., followed immediately by a reception at St. Augustine's Parish Hall. Spring interment in Fournier. Doreen's wishes were for donations to the Palliative Care Outreach Program, the Companions of the Cross, or the Canadian Cancer Society (Ottawa). In your patient and dignified suffering, you have been an inspiration to us all! The Ottawa Citizen, 03-03-2002
