It is with sadness that we announce the death of Ron Dakers while surrounded by his loving family, Nancy and his children Barbara, Robert, Allison and Pamela, on March 18, 2002. Ron was born in Victoria, B.C. on December 7, 1927, where he spent an adventurous youth and graduated from the University of British Columbia with a B.A. in chemistry and M.Sc. in metallurgy. He had a varied and distinguished career, beginning as the driver of a horse-drawn milk cart in Victoria, a tugboat crew member, a forest firefighter, and chief chemist for Eldorado Mining and Refining Limited's mine site in northern Saskatchewan. He was Head of Research and Development and Vice President of Eldorado Nuclear Limited, responsible for uranium processing operations and for environmental health/safety waste management and regulatory matters in Ottawa. Ron has influenced his children and grandchildren Kimberley, Jessica, Patrick and Alexander, and his nieces and nephews Elizabeth, Michael and Brian, through his warmth and compassion and with his love of nature, lively dinner time debates and his passion for jazz. The family would like to thank the wonderful, supportive staff at the VON, The Hospice at May Court and the Palliative Care Outreach Program in Ottawa. We would appreciate your donations in Ron's name to any of these facilities. Ron requested that his remains be donated to the University of Ottawa. The family will be holding a private memorial in the spring. In memory of Ron, please raise a glass of the finest single malt. The Ottawa Citizen, 20-03-2002
