An Algonquin College Instructor and former elementary through middle school teacher passed away at home on Sunday, March 24, 2002 after a long battle with breast cancer. She was born on May 26, 1939 in Chicago, Illinois to Phillip and Nettie Powell. She attended Roosevelt University in Chicago prior to relocating to Los Angeles, California with her family in 1963. Annette taught elementary school in Los Angeles. A mutual friend introduced Annette to Ronald Buckingham whom she married in 1968. Three years later, they along with their two children, Anthony and Michelle, immigrated to Ottawa, Ontario. Annette completed her undergraduate studies (Sociology) at Carleton University, and became a teacher for the local Catholic school board. In the early 1980's she transitioned into advertising work for a community newsletter. A few years later, she found her true calling as a certified English as a Second Language Instructor at Algonquin College. During her tenure she had groups of foreign students from a variety of cultures and circumstances, with each of whom she developed a special bond. Throughout her life, Annette always utilized her artistic flair, and alternated between painting, choral singing, and writing. She was a former member of the Our Lady of Fatima Church choir, and local writing and poetry groups. In addition to her husband and children, Annette is survived by her mother, and brother Lyndon White, both of Los Angeles, and daughter-in-law Kelly Savage of Oceanside, California. She also has extended family in Illinois, Michigan, New York, and Louisiana.
