SMITH, David Thompson Christie 2008-12-12 Mr. David Thompson Christie Smith, age 92 years, a former longtime resident of Paterson Court, peacefully passed away in Thunder Bay Interim Long Term Care, on Wednesday, December 10, 2008 with his daughter by his side. He was born September 15, 1916 in Verdun Quebec (Montreal) to the late William and Elizabeth Smith. The Smith family eventually moved to Trois Rivieres Quebec, where he met his future wife Rita. They married in Plattsburg New York in 1937, returning to Trois Rivieres to make their home. David was employed at the the Canadian International Paper Company as timekeeper/payroll clerk prior to World War II. In December 1939 he enlisted in the Navy where he served in various branches of the service including convoys in the North Atlantic. While David was serving his country, Rita moved the family to Fort William. Upon receiving his discharge in 1945 with the rank of Leading Writer, David became Chief Clerk of the War Assets Corporation until its closure. Later he joined the Fort William Fire Department and served many terms as Union President or Recording Secretary. David also tried his hand at wrting for Radio/Television. He also built a few houses including the family home He was keenly interested in politics and enjoyed a good debate. He sailed on the Great Lakes, holding the position of Fireman, watchman, wheelsman and 3rd Mate. He also earned a 2nd Mate certificate and a Radar Observer Endorsment in the off season from Con College. An avid reader, he loved to research any topic that intrigued him. In earlier days he loved to go out in his canoe observing nature, as well as enjoyng family fishing trips. David was a longtime member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #6 and Army Navy Veterans Unit #257. Survived by daughter Agnes Nistico (Norman), son-in-law Gordon Lowe, sister Grace Shelling, sister-in-law Donella Smith, grandchildren Odean (Ernie) Plouffe, Keith Nistico, Jason (Sherry) Nistico, Warren (Anna) Nistico, Jody Valencourt, Lisa Valencourt, nine great grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his wife Rita, daughter Catherine, granddaughter Christine, parents William and Elizabeth, an older brother in infancy, sister Agnes Sawyer and husband Percy, brother William and wife Rose, brother-in-law Louis Shelling, parents-in-law Frank and Christina Smith, sister-in-law Anne Boudreau and husband Romeo, brother-in-law James Edward Smith and neice Sheila Smith. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 13, 2008 in the Blake Funeral Chapel at 10:00 a.m. with Canon John Jordan officiating. The funeral will be preceded by a Legion Service of Honour conducted by the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #6. Interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Friday from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. in the Blake Funeral Chapel. If friends desire, memorials to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Alzheimer Society would be appreciated. A tree will be planted in memory of David Smith in the Blake Funeral Chapel Memorial Grove. Annual dedication service Sunday, June 28, 2009.
