Joseph “Dwight“ Purdy After a short illness, Dwight Purdy of Elgin Ontario passed away October 16, 2005 at the age of fifty-nine. The loving husband of Barbara Benger, Joseph has been a resident of the Elgin area for the past thirty -six years. The son of Joseph and Geraldine Purdy, he was born in Ottawa where he attended elementary and high school. He attained his B.A. Honours at Carleton University in 1968 and B.Ed, Queen's University in 1969. Dwight taught history for thirty years at Rideau District High school, Elgin, before retiring six years ago. Following retirement he became a member of the Lyndway Hills Men's Golf League, Gananoque Curling Club, the Elgin Days Committee, Elgin Lions Club, Elgin and Area Heritage Society and Chaffey's Lock Heritage Society. Throughout the years he coached juvenile and ladies softball teams in the Elgin area. Dwight is survived by his wife Barbara, daughter Gillian (Randy) and grandson Zachary of Ottawa; son Ryan (Dinah), Sudbury; mother Geraldine, brother Stephen (Mary), mother-in-law Myrtle Benger, sisters-in-law Shirley (David), Melodie (David), Sandra, Bonnie (Michel), brother-in-law Tim (Jill). He was predeceased by his father Joseph Purdy and father-in-law John Benger. The funeral was held October 19, 2005 with Monisgnor Patrick Carty officiating with Liturgy of the Word at St. Columbanus Church, Elgin. Pallbearers were Ross Hawkins, Rob Stephenson, Doug Bond, Myron Porter, Bob Reddick, Tim Benger.
