Leonard Meakin July 29, 1915 - October 29, 2005 Funeral arrangements by Desjardins Funeral Chapel LEONARD JOHN MEAKIN It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Leonard John Meakin on October 29, 2005 at the age of 90. Leonard is predeceased by his parents Frederick and Edith Meakin, sister Edith, and brothers Wilfred and Arthur. He is survived by his wife, Amanda who he would have celebrated 50 years of marriage with on December 30, 2005. He is also survived by his children, Brenda (Ray) and their children, Lesleigh, James and Jennifer, Len (Brigid) and their children Mandy, Mackenzie and Kailee, Bert (Liz) and their children Madison and Megan, and one brother Frederick. Dad was born and raised in Elmwood until he was married and upon which he moved to Kingston Row. He served overseas in the Canadian Army during the Second World War where he travelled to North Africa, Germany, France, Belgium and Italy. In 1956 Dad and Mom bought a cottage at Beaver Creek on Lake Winnipeg where they raised their children for many years. Dad loved to spend as much time as possible at his cabin sitting in the shade with a cool bottle of beer, “and wondering what the poor people are doing?” Dad was a mechanic who had his own service station on Maryland Avenue and then moved to Pembina and Corydon, which was called “Meakin’s Service.” One of Dad’s favourite pastimes was to spend an afternoon with his five granddaughters and he often said he thought he didn’t think he would be around to even see one grandchild. At the tender age of 90, Dad received his wish; he was independent to the last day of his life and thank you God for taking him so peacefully. Enjoy your freedom. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, November 3rd, 2005, at 3:00 p.m. at Desjardins Funeral Chapel, 357 Des Meurons Street. Donations can be made to Cancer Care Manitoba, 675 McDermot Avenue, Room ON1160, Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9 (phone 787-4143) The Desjardins Funeral Chapel in care of arrangements, 233-4949 or toll free 1-888-233-4949.
