Alvin Amos Powers, Extendicare Nursing Home, Kapuskasing, died on April 16, 2004. He was 87 years old. Mr. Powers was born on Dec. 2, 1916 in Saskatchewan and moved to Kapuskasing with his family in 1933. He worked at the Smoky Falls Power Plant from 1941 to 1953 and then moved to the Electrical Department at Spruce Falls until his retirement in 1981. He was a past president and life member of the Kapuskasing Horticultural Society and enjoyed tending his flowers and vegetable gardens, which won him many trophies over the years. Mr. Powers was also a member of the Silver Seniors Club, a trustee on the board of the United Church and served on the Kapuskasing Cemetery Board for a number of years. Mr. Powers was predeceased by his wife Margaret. He is survived by brothers George (Ann) of Kap and Jim (Mary) of Orillia, and sister Beatrice (Dean) Gordon of Arizona. Rev. Brenda Lumsden will officiate at the funeral service on April 21, 2004 at the Kapuskasing United Church. Mr. Powers will be interred in the spring at the Kapuskasing Cemetery.
