FREBOLD, Britta Peacefully in the Civic Hospital in Ottawa on the 28th of May at 91 years of age. All her life Britta thoroughly and without hesitation, has pursued her purposes in the subjects in which she was interested. She was a remarkable woman: she did it her way. She grew up in the Kingdom of Denmark in the early years of women's emancipation and, in the light of that, she developed into an independent person. Her mother was a nurse and her father a farmer. They moved around a lot and at 16 years of age Britta left home to become a woman's tailor. She then started her own business and received great recognition as a dress designer. In 1935 she married the arctic explorer Alwin Pedersen and raised two children during and after World War 2. Britta supported the family and the combined family and business pressures resulted in a divorce in 1962. She moved to Canada where she married Hans Frebold, a geologist some years older than her. They moved into a house on Patricia Ave in Ottawa's West End while Britta's children remained in Denmark. Britta took on her new role with enthusiasm and took up a long-standing interest to paint. She imbued house and garden with a sense of beauty and quietness. In the summers she worked as an assistant to her husband in his geological work in the Rocky Mountains. In the last years of her life Britta developed a wide interest in the spiritual aspects of life. She combined this with an extensive knowledge of nutrition and physical well being and became a living example, a mentor for others. After the death of her husband in the 80s, Britta lived alone. She devoted herself to helping others based on her knowledge about alternative methods of health. She enjoyed walking and cycling along the Ottawa River. She loved children and was a popular figure in the local neighbourhood. Throughout the years Britta kept in close contact with her children and grandchildren in Denmark enjoying their many visits to Patricia Avenue. A private service was held for the family. We will miss you. Love Renate and Jorgen, Astrid, Nina, Jonas and Nikolaj. The Ottawa Citizen
