BISMUTH, Professor René Eugene Victor (1918-2006) - son of Victor and Camille Bismuth, passed away on July 23rd at St. Paul's Hospital in Vancouver B.C. René had collapsed in May while visiting Seattle, subsequently surviving very difficult emergency surgery at the University of Washington Medical Center. Once stable enough, he was transferred to Vancouver, where ultimately he succumbed to pneumonia. He is survived by his son Robert, daughter-in-law Cathi, granddaughter Esme and great grandsons Casey and Dakota. René left his native French Tunisia at the start of World War II to become a pilot in the Free French Forces. He was subsequently decorated several times and made an Officier de la Légion d'honneur for his bravery and unfailing heroism as a Halifax heavy bomber pilot while flying in the RAF. His last posting was to an airdrome in Wales where he met his beloved future wife Doris, his unfailing companion for the rest of his life. As a university professor, René was widely recognized for his knowledge of languages and linguistics. Having lived all over the world, in 1965 he settled with his family in St. Catharines and became one of the founding faculty members of Brock University. Fluent in six languages, René was also an accomplished musician and a published poet. Over his lifetime he educated thousands of language students, published several books, served for many years as the President of the International Federation of French Professors and was made a commander of l'Ordre des Palmes Académiques by the French government the highest possible recognition of his academic accomplishments. At the age of 87 René was still active in his research and continued to receive invitations to speak at various academic events. An online tribute to René is available at and a celebration of René's life will be held at the Niagara-on-the-Lake Chapel of the Morgan Funeral Homes, 415 Regent Street on Sunday August 6th at 3 pm, with visitation the day before from 2 to 4 pm and from 7 to 9 pm. As per his request, René will be reunited with Doris when he is laid to rest in Wales at the beginning of September. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that those so motivated make a donation to the Doris & René Bismuth Scholarship Fund for Modern Language Studies at Brock University.
