Emily Mary Cunningham WOLFVILLE, NS - Emily Mary Cunningham, 86, of Wolfville, devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend passed away on Sunday, August 20, 2006 in the Wolfville Nursing Home. Born in Haileybury, Ontario on February 6th, 1920, she was the daughter of the late William G. and Mary (Poppleton) Cooper, pioneers in Northern Ontario. In October, 1921, during the 'Great Fire' of northern Ontario, where six towns and hundreds of square miles of woodland were destroyed, Emily sat it out with her family and many others in Lake Temiskaming. Emily was a graduate R.N. from St. Michael's Hospital, Toronto, ON (1943). She was awarded a scholarship for one year's post graduate work in Public Health Nursing which she completed at the University of Toronto (1944). She married 'her Bob' in 1945 and followed him to many places in Canada throughout his career. She gave up nursing to raise her two children John and Mairi. She was very proud of her children and devoted her life to them. Emily was a devoted Anglican and spent tireless hours with her Church. She was also an active member of the Sackville Hospital Association, Sackville, N.B. She was an avid gardener and what beautiful gardens she had. Emily is survived by her husband, Robert (Bob); son, John (Edie), Bermuda; daughter, Mairi (Neil) Balcom, Wolfville; and brother, Sheppard (Gail) Cooper of Schumacher, Ontario. She will be greatly missed by her grandsons whom she loved dearly, Matthew, Blair, Callum, Kit and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by brother, Francis (Bud) Cooper. Emily was a kind and good friend to all who needed one and she was well loved by all who knew her. There will be no visitation by family request. A memorial service to celebrate the life of Emily will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 30, 2006 in the H.C. Lindsay Funeral Home, 568 Main Street, Wolfville. Rev. Dr. Bruce Matthews officiating. A Reception will follow the service in the funeral home. A private family interment will take place prior to the service in the St. John's Anglican Church Cemetery, Wolfville. Family flowers only please, however donations in memory of our beloved Emily may be made to the 'Van Fund - Wolfville Nursing Home', Canadian Diabetes Association or charity of choice. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Ron Stuart, Dr. Michael Patterson and the staff of the Wolfville Nursing Home for their excellent care and to Sheila Blenus, Pat MacDonald and Laverne Walker for their care and kindness. Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of the H.C. Lindsay Funeral Home, Wolfville.
