OBITUARY MARY ELLEN BEWS (nee Woodsworth) 1913 - 2006 Passed away in Victoria, British Columbia on August 18, 2006. She was born in Tokyo, Japan, the eldest daughter of Ada and Harold Woodsworth. They were early missionaries in Japan. She received her education mainly at the "Canadian Academy" in Kobe, Japan and after graduating from high school she came to Queen's University, Kingston, in 1931. She received her BA in 1936. She met her future husband, Donald Bews and they were married in 1937 - a very loving wife for sixty nine years. She was the mother of Sylvia Bews-Wright (Art Wright) of Victoria, Alison Critchley of Toronto and Donald C (Jr) (Gail Godwin) of Calgary. After marriage they lived in Japan for two years and then Donald took charge of MacKay Memorial Hospital in Taipei, Taiwan (then Formosa). They were forced off the island by the Japanese in 1940. She brought up her children in Canada but in her 40's decided to get her diploma in Education. Upon completing the course at Macdonald College, McGill University she taught at Dorset School the following year. At the request of Dr. David Munroe she joined the Faculty of Education at McGill where she taught for the next fifteen years, retiring as associate professor in 1975. She is survived by four grandchildren, David Smithers of Lion's Bay, BC (Mary Lee), Antonia Meade (Ronnie) of Nassau, Bahamas, Robyn Butland Bews (Richard Butland) and Andrew Bews, all in Calgary. She was also the great grandmother of Keaton and Makaela Smithers of Lion's Bay and Lucas Butland of Calgary. She is also survived by her beloved husband Donald, and her brother David Woodsworth (Sheila) of Montreal. She was predeceased by her sister Sylvia Campbell of Toronto and Kenneth Woodsworth of Vancouver. Her many nieces, nephews and friends will cherish their memories of her. Cremation has taken place and interment will take place in Cataraqui Cemetery in Kingston in the family plot at a date convenient to the family. Published in the Montreal Gazette on 8/22/2006
