OBITUARY HOWARD MARTIN BLANK Passed away on August 9, 2006, at the age of fifty-three. He is remembered lovingly and missed greatly by his wife, Margaret, children Gina (Jonathan) Kupsch and Marty, his mother, Ruby (Vancouver), his brother Les (Rosemary) and nephew George (Nanoose Bay, B.C.), his sister-in-law, Wendy Daniel (Calgary), as well as a host of cousins and friends. Howard was born and raised in Vancouver; he "met" Marg in 1967 when their English teachers instituted a Centennial Year pen-pal program between Vancouver and her small town, Huntingdon, Quebec. After obtaining a diploma in Broadcasting from BCIT in 1974, he went to Montreal seeking work, and met Marg in person. They married Aug. 9, 1975, and moved to Calgary in 1976. There he worked ten years for AGT, and became active in the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, serving 2 years as president of the Calgary chapter. In 1987 the complications of Type 1 Diabetes, diagnosed at age 7, began to take their toll, and Howard left work to be a stay-at-home dad. He was well known at Ranchlands School for his help in the reading program, as a "Surrogate Grandpa", and a willing helper on field trips. He also volunteered during fund-raisers for JDF and the Ranchlands Community Association for as long as his health would allow. The past ten years were particularly difficult, with many physical losses due to diabetes. Howard met each one with humour and determination, and with the hope that is new every morning. He found strength in his family and in the community of St. James Anglican Church and its Caregiver Ministry. Despite failing health, he took up craft painting, and volunteered in patient education for the renal program through the Foothills Medical Centre. He took an interest in those he met at dialysis, and on the Handi-bus, where all the drivers knew him. His wisdom and his loving, gentle, generous spirit touched and inspired everyone he met. A service to remember and celebrate Howard's life will be held on Tuesday, August 29, 2006 at St. James Anglican Church, 6351 Ranchview Drive N.W., Calgary, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Foothills Hospital Foundation for the renal dialysis units and/or the HOPE program for organ transplant; the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation; St. James Anglican Church; Calgary Handi-bus; and/or Foster Parents Plan (FC# 422-034392, Paulina Del-Cisne Cumbicus). Special thanks to Dr. Fred Moriarty, Dr. Samuel Schorr, the staff of Units 27 and 37 at FMC, and the Anglican Parish of St. James, for years of loving care and tireless service.
