TANAKA Yoshiko (Kurio) It is with sadness that the family of Yoshiko Tanaka announces her passing after a short but valiant struggle with cancer on June 29, 2006. Yosh was born on May 26, 1924 in Chilliwack, B.C., the first of eight children born to Kujiro and Tama Kurio. In 1942, she was evacuated with her family to Magrath, AB to work on a sugar beet farm. In March, 1946 she married Yoshiaki (Jack) Tanaka and moved to Picture Butte, AB, where she raised six children. She was an active member of the Buddhist congregation in Picture Butte where she gladly volunteered many hours - particularly to the annual chow mein dinner. In addition to being involved with the church, she participated in a number of social activities, such as ballroom dancing, with her many friends. After her children were grown, her patience and love of children drew her to volunteer as a school aid working with children who had learning disabilities. She gave this up when grandchildren (thirteen in all) began arriving, so she could devote her love and attention to them. Yoshiko is survived by her devoted husband, Jack; and her loving children, Ed (Pam), Sharon (Dick) Johnson, Jane (George) Dixon, Glen (Naomi), Donna (Steve) Sembinelli, and Brian; and her grandchildren, Heather, Shannon, Brennan, Caitlin, Andrea, Stacy, Kristopher, Kiel, Brett, Travis, Jordan, Courtney and Justin. Yoshiko is also survived by her brothers, Harry (Mich) Kurio, Mas (Clara) Kurio, Ken (Amy) Kurio, Dr. Gordon (Brenda) Kurio; her sister-in-law Ty Kurio; sisters, Terrie Tokitsu and Helen Kurio; as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents and by her brother, Shin. The family wishes to thank the nursing staff of Unit 37 of the Tom Baker Cancer Clinic, especially nurses Carla, Noah, Kiran and Angela for their special care of our mother. Also, the family wishes to thank the staff of The Harbours of Newport Retirement Residence and all of her friends for their concern and support during this time. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on July 11, 2006, at the Lethbridge Buddhist Church, 1303 - 13 Street North, Lethbridge, AB T1H 2T8. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society (317 - 10 Street South, Lethbridge, T1J 2M7), or a charity of your choice.
