JALUVKA, Jan Josef Edvin (Jan Sr.) - Peacefully passed away at Greater Niagara General Hospital on Monday, April 19, 2004 in his 92nd year. Predeceased by his beloved wife Muriel (1978), brothers Vladimir and Alois, sisters Zofie and Vlasta in The Czech Republic. Survived by sister Olga Hubenakova also in The Czech Republic. Loving father of Jan Douglas and Erika Jaluvka, of Niagara Falls, and Joanne Margaret and Michael Morningstar, of Toronto. Dear grandfather of Tatjana Jaluvka and Miranda and Adrian Morningstar. Born and raised in Czechoslovakia, Jan escaped to freedom twice. In 1940, leaving the Nazi occupation of his homeland, he travelled overland to Lebanon to join the free Czech Army fighting in the Battle of France. In 1944-45 he served as a Captain with the U.S. Army in the liberation of Europe as aide-de-camp to several American generals earning the second highest American military decoration, the Legion of Merit Medal. After the war, he returned to Czechoslovakia with his wife, Muriel, where they lived and prospered until the Communist takeover of the country. He once again escaped from his native country and made his way to Canada with his family, settling in Niagara Falls.
