Esther Fine 1926-2006 With sadness, the family of Esther "Cookie" Fine announces her passing on September 13, 2006, at her residence. Born in Quebec City, PQ, she was the daughter of the late Moses and Pauline Greenblatt. She moved to Moncton with her family at an early age and graduated from Moncton High School in 1943, with the Governor General's medal. She briefly attended Dalhousie University and later graduated from Mount Allison University with a B.A. degree, majoring in psychology. In 1946, she and her husband Isadore established Fine's Ltd., a clothing store that became a Main Street landmark for fifty years. An avid collector of antiques, she was a past president of the Maritime Antiques Dealers Association and assembled an impressive collection of American art glass and Nova Scotia glass. She was an active supporter of local figure skating and helped organize the 1974 Canadian figure skating championship in Moncton. She took great pleasure in the hooking of rugs and enjoyed her time spent with local rug-hooking groups. In 1995, she and her husband donated their collection of Inuit art, one of the largest such private collections in Canada, to the Université de Moncton, where it is now known as the "Isadore-Esther Fine Inuit Art Collection". Her role in the establishment of this collection was later acknowledged by the Université de Moncton with the awarding of an honorary doctorate in 2001. A longstanding member of the Tiferes Israel Synagogue, she was also active in the University Women's Club of Moncton and Hadassah WIZO, and a supporter of numerous charitable organizations. Esther is survived by Isadore, her husband of sixty-one years; three sons, Michael (Sandy) of Denver, Colorado; Philip and David, both of Toronto; and daughter, Rosalie (Steven) of Halifax; three grandchildren, Lisa, Rebecca and Jacques; and sisters, Ruth and Mildred. She was predeceased by brothers, Jayson and Mendel Greenblatt. Funeral service at Tiferes Israel Synagogue, Steadman Street, Friday September 15th, 2006, 2pm. Interment, Tiferes Israel Cemetery, Dieppe. Shiva will be at her residence, 114 Century Drive, Moncton beginning Sunday for the week from 10am to 1:00pm and 4:00pm until 9:00pm. In Lieu of flowers donations to Hadassah WIZO would be appreciated by her family. Ferguson Knowles Funeral Home, 1657 Mountain Road, Moncton (858-1995) in care of arrangements.
