MACGILLIVARY, DR. WILLIAM W. "BILL" At the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital in Fredericton on Wednesday, September 13, 2006 William W. "Bill" MacGillivary passed away after a courageous battle. Born in Florence, NS he graduated from Florence Public School and Sydney Mines High School. Graduated with as Bachelor of Physical Education degree from the University of New Brunswick in 1962. Bill was employed by the Dartmouth YM-YWCA from 1962-63. He graduated with an M.A. from the University of Alberta in 1965. Employed by McMaster University from 1965-67 as a Lecturer and Assistant Coach. He was hired by the University of New Brunswick in 1967 as an Assistant Professor and Head Hockey Coach. Received his PhD from the University of Wisconsin in 1977. He was a Professor in Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation (Kinesiology) at UNB- 1967-1997, became Dean of the Faculty of Kinesiology in 1980 and held this post until 1991. Bill served as Technical Director for Hockey New Brunswick from 1972 to 1984, was a member of Canadian Hockey Association (now Hockey Canada) from 1972 to 1997 and served as Chairman of the Board from 1993-1995. He was a Canadian Hockey representative to IIHF Board- 1993-95, member of the Board of the Canadian Olympic Association from 1991-1995 and currently a Board member of this organization, Board member Fredericton YM-YWCA 1995- 1998, Board member of Special Olympics New Brunswick from 1989 to 2005, Board member of Special Olympics Canada from 2000 to 2003, Board member of Canadian Sport Centre Atlantic from 2002 to 2005, Board member of Jobs Unlimited from 1992 to the present (currently Chairman of the Board), member of the Board of Directors of Fredericton Sports Investments (1990) lnc. From 1995 to the present and currently President. Over the years Bill has received numerous awards and honours, selected Coach of the Year for Atlantic University Hockey Conference–1974, awarded Labatt Hockey Volunteer award for contributions to hockey in N.B., -1980, Hockey New Brunswick Award for Hockey development-1986, selected to NB. Canada Games Mission staff –1987, named first Life Member for Hockey New Brunswick-1988, inducted to the Fredericton Sports Wall of Fame-1995, awarded United Nations Volunteer Medal-2002, selected for the Canadian Olympic Association Mission staff for Winter Olympics-2002, awarded the Joe Kane Trophy for service to hockey in Canada by he CIS-2003, selected 2006 Distinguished Citizen – City of Fredericton Award. Bill was associated with the Forest Hill United Church. He is survived by his wife Sandra (Boyd) MacGillivary; two sons James "Sandy" of Saint John, NB, Tim at home; his beloved border collie MacDuff; 1 sister Neila Sullivan (Edward) of George's River, Cape Breton, NS; uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Resting at Bishop's Funeral Home 540 Woodstock Road Fredericton with visitation on Saturday, September 16, 2006 from 3:00 to 8:00 pm. A funeral service will be held Sunday, September 17, 2006 at 3:00 pm at Wilmot United Church in Fredericton with Rev. Meredith Fraser officiating, assisted by Rev. H. Gil MacKenzie.
