THE HONOURABLE CHARLES JOSEPH ARTHUR HUGHES Q.C., O.C. The Hughes Family sadly announces that Charles Joseph Arthur Hughes , who served for twelve years as Chief Justice of New Brunswick, died peacefully at his Fredericton home on Sunday, September 24th, 2006 at the age of 97. Born in Fredericton on March 2nd, 1909, he was descended from one of the first Irish Catholic families to settle in New Brunswick, his great-grandfather Laurence Hughes arriving here in 1816. He was the son of the late James Austin Hughes and Eveleen (McMahon) Hughes and husband of the late Edith Barbara Hughes (Atwater). He attended Fredericton schools graduating from U.N.B. with the class of 1930. He was called to the Bar in 1933 after having studied law under the tutelage of his uncle, Peter Hughes. He began his legal career as a solo practitioner in St. Stephen, N.B. where he met his future wife Edith, whom he married in 1937. He later became Senior Partner with the well-known Fredericton firm, Hughes, Dickson, Cochrane and Stevenson. During his years in practice, he was known as a consummate professional, counting among his many clients, Lord Beaverbrook, the City of Fredericton and Time Magazine. He served on two Royal Commissions, held honorary degrees from both U.N.B. and St. Thomas University and as well was the recipient of the Order of Canada. Prior to his appointment as Chief Justice in 1972, he sat as a judge of the York County Court and on the Appeal Division of the New Brunswick Supreme Court. Charles loved the law and worked until his 75th birthday when, as he often put it he "was forced to retire." Throughout his professional and personal life he was well known for the respect he always showed others, particularly to those who appeared before him in his court. Mr. Hughes is survived by his three children: Richard Atwater Hughes, (Judy), Charles David Hughes Q.C. (Cecile) and Barbara Hughes Campbell (Paul), all of Fredericton; five grand- children: Spain Hughes-Fagan (Aidan) of Dublin, Ireland, Peter and Lindsay Hughes, Joseph and Rose Campbell, all of Fredericton; three great grandchildren, Charles and Joseph Hughes-Fagan and Leah Clark. He is also survived by one sister, Florence Hughes of Fredericton. He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Edith, who died in 1998; his grandson Sean Hughes; his brothers Edward Hughes QC and Harold Hughes and a sister, Helen Hughes. Visitation will be held at McAdam's Select Community Funeral Home on Wednesday, September 27th, 2006 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Dunstan's Catholic Church on Thursday, September 28th, 2006 at 12:00 noon with Rev. Gerald White as Celebrant. Interment will be in the Hermitage Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of one's choice. (458-9170) www.mcadamsfh.com [The Telegraph-Journal]
