FOWLIE, Joan Airlie 80, Wallace, Nova Scotia, passed away Saturday, January 6, 2007, in East Cumberland Lodge, Pugwash, NS. Born in Glasgow, Scotland she was the daughter of the late Albert and Janette (Wilson) Turner. Joan was a Corporal in the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS) serving during the latter war years as a Driver Mechanic for convoys from the north of Britain to the London docks. She and her family immigrated to Canada in 1960 to Halifax and there her acting interest led her to the Halifax Theatre Arts Guild and performing at the Neptune Theatre. She is a past president of the Guild. The family then moved to Ottawa where Joan pursued other interests. She was an accomplished potter, a founding member of an artist cooperative in Ottawa's Byward Market and a weaver. In '76 she moved back to Nova Scotia to Oliver School House where she further developed her weaving and took up painting. We are fortunate to have some beautiful pieces of her work to help hold her close. She is predeceased by her loving husband John, in August of '06 and they cherished each other for 59 beautiful years. She is survived by her sons Michael, Aylmer, Que., and Colin (Teresa) Wallace, NS; granddaughters Maya (Christopher), Toronto, Ont., and Jen, Halifax, NS; also by extended family members in Scotland; fondly remembered by Christine of Ottawa. Special thanks to the nurses, staff and residents of East Cumberland Lodge for all their kind care and support to Joan and to the family. There will be a family gathering at a later date. Donations may be made to East Cumberland Lodge, P.O. Box 250 Pugwash, NS B0K 1L0 or to the Pugwash Library c/o Cumberland Library Board, 21 Acadia St., Amherst NS B4H 4W3.
