Sister Veronica Ann Nolan (Sister Ann of the Cross) A Grey Sister of the Immaculate Conception, Pembroke, Ontario died in Pembroke on the 9th day of June 2007 in the 71st year of her Religious Life. Left to mourn are the members of her Religious Community, her sister-in-law, Dolly, several nieces and nephews and her friend from childhood, Angela Echert, CSJ. She is predeceased by her parents James Nolan and Ann McArdle, her brothers, Thomas James, Clarence Patrick, (Madeline), her nephews Jim Nolan and Dennis Nolan. Sister Ann was born in Blyth, ON, on October 3rd, 1913 and grew up in Seaforth, where she received primary and secondary education. Following graduation from Normal School in Stratford, ON Sister Ann taught in a rural school near Mount Forest, ON. She entered the Grey Sisters in Pembroke, on September 3rd, 1936. Sister Ann taught in Pembroke and Ottawa. Sister was principal for eight years of Assumption School, (Eastview) Vanier City. The greatest part of Sister Ann's active life, was spent in the Dominican Republic. There, she was instrumental in the construction of modern schools in Yamas and Consuelo. Quality education was given to the very poor. Sister Ann introduced music, both vocal and instrumental, as an element of enrichment to education. Her legacy of education and music has gone far beyond anything she herself envisioned. Due to failing health, Sister Ann returned to Canada in March 2002. She spent her last years in a spirit of gratitude and joy, in Shalom Residence of Marianhill, Pembroke. Resting at the Marguerite Centre, 700 Mackay Street in Pembroke, Ontario on Tuesday, June 12th, 2007 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Special Vespers in the Chapel 7:00 p.m. Liturgy of the Resurrection in the Marguerite Centre Chapel on Wednesday, June 13th, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. Interment in St. Columba's Cemetery, Pembroke, Ontario.
