PECK, Mary Evelyn (nee Biggar) Passed away peacefully in hospital, in the early morning of Thursday, June 21, 2007, aged 87 years. Much loved wife of 64 years to George, and loving mother to Brenda (Willard Smith), Barbara (David Dunbar), John (Alexandra) and Alex (Anne Scott). Her daughters and sons were all in Ottawa to say goodbye. She was a wonderful grandmother to her six long-awaited grandchildren: Spencer, Georgia, Evan, Oliver, Joe and Ben. Born in Montreal, Mary also lived in Vancouver, Ottawa, Fredericton, NB, and in her cherished seaside home on Deer Island. She was a graduate of McGill University and Carleton University. Though she devoted many happy years to raising her children, she later worked as a research historian on the restoration of the Fortress of Louisbourg and on numerous other projects. She was the proud author of six books, including The Bitter With the Sweet, a social history of New Brunswick from 1604 to 1984. Throughout her life she was a friend to many. Known for her energy and hospitality, Mary always welcomed visitors to her door, the more the merrier. Her life was filled with her love of family and friends, not to mention art, theater, literature, travel, flowers and cats. Mary's family would like to thank the staff on Ottawa 2 West of the Perley & Rideau Veterans' Health Centre for caring for Mary over the past few months, and the seventh-floor staff of the Ottawa General Hospital for their gentle care and consideration during her final days. We also appreciate the attention from her special Ottawa friends who helped her so much in the last few years and have become as close as family. A service will be held at 11 a.m. this Saturday, June 23rd, at McKay United Church, 39 Dufferin Road, Ottawa. Interment will take place at a later date in the family cemetery near Sussex, NB. In honor of her memory, donations to McGill University would be appreciated. Mary will be greatly missed. Published in the Ottawa Citizen from 6/22/2007 - 6/23/2007
