OBITUARY DR MARIA RATZER 1914 - 2007 With great sadness the family of Maria Ratzer announces that Maria died peacefully on June 27, 2007 at Place Kensington, Westmount. She was a loving mother of Peter and Gerald and grandmother of James, Edward and Ian. Maria was born in Marienbad in Bohemia, the only child of Janni and Bertha Stegmuller. She did not know her father, a Lieutenant Colonel in the Austrian army who died on the Italian front in the First World War, and she considered Dr Schildbach, her mother's second husband, as her father. Her schooling started in Marienbad and after secondary school followed an unconventional path that included a commercial college, a finishing school in Switzerland, the conservatoire in Prague, the German Girls Lyceum in Prague and then the German University in Prague where she studied medicine for two years. In July 1938 she met and married John Ratzer (1907-1984) in a week and immediately left Czechoslovakia for England, only a few weeks before Hitler's entry into the Sudetenland. Her husband worked for the Bata Shoe Company in England and in 1947 his career took him with Bata to Glasgow, Scotland where Maria spent the next 53 years of her life. In 1948 she resumed her medical studies at Glasgow University and graduated in 1953. She obtained her MD in 1961 and worked as a consultant dermatologist in the West of Scotland, continuing as a valued locum for a decade after her retirement. She came to Place Kensington from Glasgow in 2000, to be close to the Canadian half of the family. Despite her increasing dementia, she was able to participate in many activities at Place Kensington, in particular the watercolour painting, knitting and exercise classes, and enjoyed the care offered by the wonderful staff there. Her family thanks all the staff at Place Kensington and her additional carers, in particular Mary Lewis, who made her last years as comfortable as possible. There will be a Vin d'honneur at Place Kensington, 4430 St. Catherine St. W. on Thursday, July 5 at 6 p.m. Maria's ashes will be interred with those of her mother and husband in Linn Cemetery, Glasgow, Scotland. Those wishing may make donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation and any condolences and tributes may be made to Professor Gerald Ratzer, 489 Argyle Avenue, Westmount, QC, H3Y 3B3.
