VANEVERY, Alton Conrad - The people of Grand River lost a strong voice of community spirit Thursday, July 19, 2007 when Alton VanEvery completed his circle of life. He leaves many wonderful memories for his family, wife Barbara Vyse, daughter Lisa, granddaughters Alaina and Alyse, great-granddaughter, Cloe; siblings, Mary Bloomfield, Jan Longboat, Cao Beaver, Carole Hill; brother Wayne VanEvery; sisters-in-law Florence Smith and Shirley Smith and many nieces and nephews. Meeting him in the Spirit World are his parents Titus and Vera VanEvery, siblings Hazel Hill, Doris Miller, Delores Littlewood, Basil VanEvery, Jean Allison, Shin VanEvery, stepsons, William and Michael Vyse. Alton was proud to be born at Six Nations of the Grand River and lived his life as an educator at the elementary and college levels. He demonstrated his strong belief in public service as a former Six Nations Band Counsellor, trustee to the Grand Erie Board of Education and the Ontario Board of Parole. He was one of the founding members and past chairman of the Six Nations arena, the Chiefswood Bridge committee, the Gane Yohs Medical Centre and Iroquois Lodge Committees. He also served on many other committees including Public Works, Housing, Justice, Education and Land Claims. Alton was also a former boards member of the Helpline Food Bank and the Victim's Crisis Assistance Service. He served on the communications committee for Cancer Care Ontario. He previously worked for the community as an alcohol and drug counselor and criminal court worker. Most recently, he was a member of the Public Works committee, Ganokwa Sra Women's Shelter and Six Nations Park and Recreation. Alton loved sports and served as a referee in hockey and lacrosse as well as an umpire in baseball. The joys of his life were Barbara and his girls and the highlight of everyday was his great-granddaughter, Cloe. His family and community will celebrate his life on Sunday, July 22, 2007, 7 p.m. at STYRES FUNERAL HOME, Ohsweken. Alton's funeral will take place at St. Paul's Anglican Church, Sour Springs on Monday, July 23, 2007 at 11 a.m. Burial at Stump Hall, First Line. 10751725
