David Barnes February 01, 1948 - July 16, 2007 We regret to announce the passing of David Barnes on Monday, July 16, 2007 in his home at Portage la Prairie at the age of 59 years. He was predeceased by his parents Godfrey and Blanche Barnes and father-in-law Jack Porterfield. Left to cherish his memory arehis wife Jo-Ann, daughter Lisa, son Kurt (Keira), granddaughter Morgan, brother Geoff of England, cousin Joan and family as well as aunts, uncles and cousins and their families in England. He will also be missed by his mother-in-law Velma Porterfield, sister-in-law Nancy (Albert) Fehr, nieces Sarah (Matt) and Becky (Trevor) and brother-in-law Bob Porterfield. David was born in Poole, Dorset England on February 1, 1948. He grew up and was educated in the town of Wareham. After graduating from Poole Technical College, he spent three years at Hamworthy Engineering before moving to Canada in February of 1973. In Canada he was employed with the Trans Canada Pipe Line for 27 years and more recently at Cobbes Plumbing and Heating for the past 5 years until his health prevented him from working. David was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, the Portage District Arts Council and the Manitoba Association of Rugby Reffs. He enjoyed all sports but especially rugby and golf. He found much pleasure in photography and volunteered many hours taping with Shaw Cable. David enjoyed time spent with family and friends. He liked fishing with the kids and loved the summers at Delta. David had a good sense of humor and claimed to always laugh the hardest at himself. He had a wonderful attitude about his illness and encouraged everyone not to feel sorry for him. A time of visitation and viewing will take place on Thursday, July 19, 2007 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel, 56 Royal Road S., Portage la Prairie. In keeping with David's wishes there will be no funeral service but rather a celebration of his life as family and friends gather to remember some of the good times and memories shared with David. You are welcome to come and go between 2:00 and 4:00 pm at the Royal Canadian Legion, 275 Duke Ave. in Portage la Prairie, on Saturday, July 21, 2007. As expressions of sympathy, if friends so wish, donations may be made in David’s memory to Central Plains Cancer Care Services, 318 Saskatchewan Ave. E., Portage la Prairie, MB R1N 0K8, or to Portage District General Hospital Foundation, 524 5th Street SE, Portage la Prairie, MB R1N 3A8, or to Royal Canadian Legion # 65, 275 Duke Ave, Portage la Prairie, MB R1N 0S5 or a charity of your choice.
