Mrs. Muriel Mavis Hayes (nee McLeod) November 27, 1926 - October 30, 2008 - HAYES, Muriel Mavis (McLeod) Our dear mother Muriel Hayes of Edmonton passed away at the age of 81 years, after a long struggle with cancer. She was born in Coalhurst, Alta., on November 27, 1926 and passed away in Edmonton on October 30, 2008. She will be lovingly remembered by two sons, John (Linda) and Peter (Amber), and three grandchildren, David, Kaitlyn and Sarah, by her brother Neil (Olga) of Powell River, BC, and by a large extended family in Alberta, British Columbia, Nova Scotia and the U.K. She will also be remembered by two daughters-in-law, Christa and Marge, and many friends who were touched by her kindness. She was pre-deceased by her husband Ron in 1996, her mother Lucy and her father John “Pat,” and her sisters Doris (Bill) and Vera (Frank). She was born near Lethbridge, but grew up in the Crowsnest Pass and, before settling in Edmonton, lived in Calgary, England and Sweden. She graduated as an RN in Calgary in 1950, worked in London, England as a Queen’s Nurse, in Edmonton at the Aberhart Memorial Sanatorium and then as Director of Nursing at the Hardisty Nursing Home. While in Stockholm, she lived with and tutored the family of the Japanese Minister to the Ambassador to Sweden. She was an active member of Norwood Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, serving as Worthy Matron in 1976. She had been a season ticket holder with the Edmonton Oilers since 1974, five years before they joined the NHL. The family would like to extend thanks to the many health professionals who helped her battle cancer for 10 years, and the staff at the Grey Nuns Palliative Care Ward 43 for their care in recent weeks. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, November 4, 2008, at Evergreen Funeral Chapel, 16204 Fort Road, Edmonton, AB at 2:00 p.m.. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations made in her name to the Alberta Wilderness Association at albertawilderness.ca would be appreciated.
