Mrs. Sharon Lynn Black October 15, 1953 - October 31, 2008 - BLACK (Mercer), Sharon Lynn 55, Lower Sackville, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on October 31, 2008. Born in Halifax on October 15, 1953, she was a daughter of Harold and the late Helen Mercer. After attending Halifax City schools, she graduated from the Nova Scotia Teachers College in Truro, specializing in Elementary grades. Sharon taught for the past 34 years in Lower Sackville at the former Sackville Heights Elementary and her current school, Millwood Elementary. Over the years as teaching trends changed, many students and families benefited from Sharon's common sense approach to learning. Throughout her career, Sharon was a dedicated active member of the Nova Scotia Teachers Union. In June 2008, she was awarded the "Local Service Award" for her continuous commitment to the NSTU. In February, during her final year of teaching, Sharon was diagnosed with cancer. She faced her illness with courage, grace and dignity welcoming numerous friends and visitors to her home and to her cottage in Caribou River, Pictou Co. Sharon had a love for life and family. She particularly enjoyed summers at the cottage, motorcycle trips and traveling South. Sharon is survived by her father, Harold Mercer, Halifax; brother, Kevin, Moncton, N.B. Sharon will be greatly missed by her devoted husband, Wayne, who lovingly supported and guided her throughout her illness. She will also be greatly missed by son, Jeffrey (Jonelle), Dartmouth; daughter, Lindsay, Lower Sackville and her grandson, Jayden, the apple of Nana's eye. As well as her immediate family, Sharon leaves behind her friend, Marilyn (Ian) Sloan. She will be missed by Robert and Beryl Black; sisters-in-law, Sharon (Kelly) Adams, Rhonda (Carl) Hartlen; brother-in-law, Barry (Mary) Black and several nephews and a niece. Special thanks to the VON and Palliative nurses, your care, support and guidance was greatly appreciated. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Sunday evening, November 2, and 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Monday in Atlantic Funeral Home, 125 Sackville Dr. A service to honor and celebrate Sharon's life will be held Tuesday, November 4, at 1 p.m. in Emmanuel Baptist Church, 633 Pockwock Rd., Hammonds Plains. Family flowers only. Donations of remembrance may be made to Millwood Elementary School library. On-line condolences can be sent to the family by visiting:
