He was born in Chelmsford, Essex, England on May 21, 1915. Fred was the youngest son of the late James and Alice Gascoigne and brother to Leslie. He was married to his beloved wife, the late Marjorie Gascoigne (Smith) for 63 years. He is survived by his son, David (Debbie) of Hammonds Plains; and daughter, Jean of Elmsdale. Fred served in the Second World War with the Royal Army Service Corps. He worked for Gard's Timber in Chelmsford for 35 years, and later worked for the Marconi Research Company in Great Baddow, England. Fred resided in Chelmsford, Essex until 1995, when he and Marjorie immigrated to Canada. They made their home in Elmsdale until January 2001, when they moved to Northwood. Here, they made many new friends. Fred was an accomplished carpenter. He loved his family and friends, had a delightful wit and sense of humour, and enjoyed sharing his philosophical thoughts on just about any topic. Fred, you sure will be missed. There will be no visitation by request. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 6, in Atlantic Funeral Home Chapel, 6552 Bayers Rd., Halifax, followed by a reception. Family flowers only.
