Mr. Steward Basil Smith August 30, 1919 - November 21, 2008 - SMITH, Stewart Basil SMITH, Stewart Basil - 89, Sheet Harbour/Halifax, died suddenly, but peacefully, in Camp Hill Veterans' Memorial Building, QEII, Friday, November 21, 2008. Born in Necum Teuch, he was a son of Adam and Edith Smith. Stewart served in the Second World War in both the Merchant Marine and the Royal Canadian Navy. After the war, he worked for Standard Paving until 1958 when he left to join the Halifax Regional Water Commission and retired after 26 years of service. During the early part of his retirement, Stewart donated his time and efforts to Beacon House in Lower Sackville. After the death of his beloved wife, Patricia "Pat" in 1997, he moved to a retirement residence in Sheet Harbour. He spent many happy years there with lots of friends and several of his sisters close by. Stewart became quite well known for the little wooden boats he carved and painted and always had one to give to whomever stopped by. Stewart will be sadly missed by his children, Janet (Chris) Wickstrom, Truro; Danny (Debbie) Smith, Hillsvale; John (Kelly) Smith, Lower Sackville; Andy (Heather) Smith, Bedford; Jennifer (John) Burke, Dartmouth; Suzanne (Robert) Wilson, Lower Sackville; grandchildren, Dawn, Kimberley, Lindsay, Dave, Nicholas, Bradley, Mitchell, Matthew, Justin, and Jacob; one great-granddaughter, Lacy; sisters, Mae Richards, Halifax; Pearl Williams, Necum Teuch; Maude Lowe, Timberlea; Gloria Lowe, Mosher River; Juanita Reid, Necum Teuch; and many nieces and nephews. Stewart was predeceased by wife Patricia; sisters, Freda Jewers, Alva Fleet, Ida Lowe; and brothers, Scott and Duncan. Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. on Wednesday in Atlantic Funeral Home Chapel, 125 Sackville Dr., Lower Sackville. Burial will take place in Gate of Heaven Cemetery immediately after the service, followed by a fellowship with the family in the Atlantic Funeral Home Lounge. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Camp Hill Veterans' Memorial Building. On-line condolences may be made by visiting:
