Mrs. Annie Merko January 1, 1914 - November 28, 2008 - MERKO Annie Merko (Kross) passed away peacefully at Grandview Lodge on November 28, 2008 in her 95th year. Born on January 1, 1914 in Russia, Annie immigrated to Canada in 1923. She arrived in Canada through Pier 1 in Halifax, and moved to Thunder Bay where she met and married Joseph Merko in 1940. Annie was a member of Westfort Baptist Church and in 2000 cut the church’s 100th anniversary cake as the oldest member of the congregation. She enjoyed singing in the choir, teaching Sunday school classes, attending prayer meetings and women’s groups throughout her years. Annie is predeceased by her husband Joseph, her brother Bill, and her sister Nina. She is survived by her sister Elizabeth Gandrud, brothers John and Steve, sister-in-law Netty Kross, son Joseph and wife Susan, grandchildren Michael and wife Julie, Elizabeth and husband Duane Piper, Matthew and fiancée Laura and many nieces and nephews. She deeply loved all her family and was always concerned for their physical and spiritual wellbeing. The Merko family extends a heartfelt thank you to the wonderful staff at Grandview Lodge who cared for Annie. They would also like to thank the many members of Westfort Baptist Church who supported her throughout her life. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Monday, December 1 from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. at Jenkens Funeral Home Cremation and Reception Centre, 226 S. Syndicate Avenue. Funeral Services for Annie will be held on Tuesday, December 2 at 11:00 a.m. at Westfort Baptist Church with Pastor Allan Piper officiating. Internment to follow at Mountain View Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Westfort Baptist Church or the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
