MARGARET McMILLAN By editorial Monday, 10 November 2008 - 4:46pm. Obituaries Margaret (Meta) Helen McMillan, 86, of Atikokan, On., passed away Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2008, at the Extended Care Wing of the Atikokan General Hospital. Meta was born in Craigmonie Culrain Kincardine, Scotland to William and Margaret MacKenzie on Jan. 31, 1922. Meta married Peter George McMillan on March 16, 1944 in Scotland. Meta then came to Canada on Feb. 23, 1946 on a hospital ship called the “Letitia.” It was an 11-day crossing to Halifax, N.S., where she continued by train to Winnipeg, Man. to meet Peter. They settled on a farm in Black Hawk, Ont. on March 10, 1946. They moved to Emo in 1952 and then to Atikokan on June 14, 1954, where Peter took a job with C.A.C. (later Steep Rock Mine). Meta earned a college degree in Home Economics and taught cooking classes when she came to Canada. She then took various cooking positions at Sinclair’s Restaurant, the Steep Rock Hotel, the Rockton Hotel, Quetico Center, and Mink Lake Junior Ranger Camp, then finished her career cooking at Quetico Park French Lake staff house. During this time, she also cooked for many functions at the Royal Canadian Legion. Meta enjoyed volunteer work. She was an associate member of the Royal Canadian Legion Br. #145. She served as president for the Royal Canadian Legion Ladies Auxiliary in 1980-81 and 1983, and earned a life membership. She served as president of the Atikokan Hospital Auxiliary from1991-95, and also served two terms as treasurer for the Pioneer Center. Other activities included work with the United Church Ladies Auxiliary, Benevolent and Sick and Visiting programs for the Legion, and Bingo sales for the Lions TV Bingo. She bought her first computer at the age of 77 and enjoyed countless hours tracing her family tree, searching the ’Net, and communicating with friends. Meta is survived by her son, Eric of Virginia Beach, Va.; and daughters, Marlene (Dan) Gagne and Janice (Wayne) Bingham, and son, James (Carol) McMillan, all of Atikokan, Ont. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Greg McMillan of New Westminster, B.C., Jodi (Ken) Skaggs of Atlanta, Ga., Debra (Greg) Alexander of Atikokan, Ont., Nicole (Larry) Gagne of Fort Frances, Ont., Dan (Jennifer) Gagne of Atikokan, Ont., Mark (Nicole) Bingham of Atikokan, Ont., and Mark McMillan of Guelph, Ont.; and great-grandchildren, Natalie Cheslock McMillan of New Westminster, B.C., Victoria and Dalton Alexander of Atikokan, Ont., Madison and Mathew Gagne of Atikokan, Ont., and Marni and Joel Bingham of Atikokan, Ont. Meta was predeceased by her daughter, Jean, on June 14, 1954; her husband, Peter, on Oct. 18, 1990; and daughter-in-law, Peggy McMillan on Jan. 10, 2006. She also was predeceased by her parents, William and Margaret MacKenzie of Scotland; sisters, Babs MacKenzie of Scotland and Winnie Berry of New Zealand; and brother, Eric MacKenzie of Scotland. Funeral services will be held on Friday, Nov. 14, 2008 at 1 p.m. at the Riverview United Church in Atikokan, with interment at the Little Falls Cemetery in Atikokan. If so desired, in memoriam donations may be made to the Riverview United Church or the Atikokan General Hospital.
