Kathleen Lonergan Kubas Our Lovely Lady of the Hats For 70 years, Trenton native Kathleen brought a special blend of style, flair and innovation to everything she did. Kathleen excelled as a daughter (Ted and Leona Lonergan), sister (Jim, Paul and Gil), wife (Len), mother (Christopher), teacher (the more than 1,000 youngsters from Trenton and York Region whom she taught to read), and inspiration to friends and strangers alike. Kathleen graduated from St. Peter's School and was President of Trenton High School. She started teaching at St. Peter's in 1957 after she received her teaching certificate from Peterborough Teacher's College. She spent most of the next 40 years encouraging Primary students (mainly Grade One) to enjoy learning. She had exceptional skills and success as a teacher of reading, based on proven methods of applying phonics. Her classrooms were among the most creative and artistic wherever she taught. She met and married Len Kubas, an Air Force Navigator who was stationed at Trenton, on July 1, 1961 at St. Peter's Church. She became Christopher's Mom 18 months later. After moving to Toronto in 1968, Kathleen started teaching at York Catholic District School Board, where she became famous as the most fashionable teacher in the Region. During the 1980s, she received her BA degree from Atkinson College, York University at night school while working full time while being a mother and wife. Kathleen's mission in life was to add glamour and fashion to everything she did, and wearing fabulous hats made her stand out wherever she went. She loved California, especially the Monterey Bay area. In recent years, Kathleen regularly graced Yonge Street in North Toronto, making friends and attracting many compliments from both women and men about her elegant style and wonderful hats. Kathleen leaves an enduring legacy as an outstanding teacher with amazing creativity in everything she did. She died peacefully at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto on November 22, with her only child Christopher holding her hand. Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Blessed Sacrament Church (Yonge St. and Lawrence Ave., Toronto) at 12 noon on Saturday, November 29, 2008, followed by A Celebration of her Life. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate a donation to: The Kathleen Kubas Reading Proficiency Award, c/o Anna Lima, York Catholic District School Board, 320 Bloomington Road West, Aurora Ontario, L4G 3G8. The Kathleen Kubas Reading Proficiency Award will be presented annually to the Grade One Class with the highest achievement in reading among 81 schools in the York Catholic District School Board. All of Kathleen's students could read when they left Grade One. May Flights of Angels Wing You to Your Rest 11336808
