BOLANDER, Rodney Howell November 3, 1929 - November 21, 2008 "For I have taken your loving kindness and truth as my ideals" - Psalm 26:3 It is with great sadness that the Bolander family announces the passing of Rodney Howell Bolander at the age of 79, after a brief and courageous battle with Leukemia, with his friends and family by his side. Rodney is survived by his daughter Janice (Calgary); two sons, Grant (Kelowna) and Donald (Vernon); grandson Raymond (Calgary); and younger sister Margaret Obrigewitch (Lethbridge). He was predeceased by his wife of fifty years Olive Bolander; his older sister Velma Laverty; and his parents Elizabeth Emma and Roland Henry Bolander. The Great Depression had an impact on his life such that he was known and respected for his spirit of generosity. His love was unconditional and he strove to have a unique relationship with each member of his family and his many friends. Forever proud of his Saskatchewan roots, this prairie boy from Maple Creek had an easy sense of humour such that he could strike up a conversation with anyone. His sincere interest in others made him successful in his long career with London Life. He was a Saskatchewan Roughriders fan, a great hockey dad, enjoyed taking his sons and grandson fishing, loved going to folk concerts, strumming on his old banjo and keeping his mind sharp by reading literature and Canadian history as well as doing daily crossword puzzles. So very important to his life was his active membership with Southwood United Church. He and the fellows there would even volunteer to peel apples for the church's pies! You could easily find him over at the Legion, passing time with his friends over a friendly game of pool. You could also easily go to him for his gentle, compassionate and wise advice because he was sincerely interested in your wellbeing. We are grateful for his heart of a servant. He truly strove to lead by Jesus' example. Rodney was, and still is, a great man. Relatives and friends are invited to join us for a Memorial Service at Southwood United Church (10690 Elbow Drive S.W.) on Saturday, November 29, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com . The Bolander family wishes to extend a special thank you to the Palliative Care, the Emergency Medical Services, the staff and volunteers of the Foothills Hospital Emergency Ward, the Tom Baker Cancer Centre and Southwood Hospice for their timely support, kindness and dedication. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada, No. 310, 1682 West 7th Avenue, Vancouver, BC V61 4S6 (Telephone toll-free 1-866-547-LIFE (5433), www.lls.org/canada ). In living memory of Rodney Bolander, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McInnis and Holloway Funeral Homes, Fish Creek Chapel, 14441 Bannister Road S.E. Telephone: 403-256-9575. Published in the Calgary Herald from 11/26/2008- 11/28/2008
