HAMMELL, Harold Henry 1914 - 2008 Surrounded by family, grandpa passed away peacefully with the dignity and grace he lived his life with. Harold was born on September 5, 1914, in St. James, Manitoba. It was in St. James where grandpa met and married the mother of his children, Marion Alexander. Together they had a wonderful life which included being blessed with four children; Claudia (Doug) Norris, Harlene (John) Day, Debra (Ed) Sweep and Clint (Tracy) Hammell. Together Harold and Marion made the family home in the Glendale area. Early days saw these two helping with the fund drive for the Glendale Community Club. Grandpa was known to flood and shovel the local outdoor rink. Marion left Harold's side on August 25, 1969. Love found our grandpa again in 1972, when he married our Gramma Dorene. We were now an extended and blended family brought together by love. Grandpa was fortunate to add two more daughters to his life with Dorene's children; Donna (Al) Rowntree and Sherry (Richard) Smeltzer. Grandpa worked for West Steel Rosco for many years both in the Calgary office and then on the road for years. He loved to travel and was a member of the Kensington Legion. Retirement was good for Grandpa, as he and Dorene enjoyed traveling, time with grandkids and great-grandkids, gardening and their many trips to their "hot spot" Vegas. It was in Vegas that Grandpa celebrated his 94th birthday just a few months ago. After this wonderful trip, grandpa's health started to deteriorate until his passing on November 24, 2008. Known as the wearer of many hats, father, husband, grandfather and great-grandfather. Also known to many as a friend, a crazy gambler, athlete, and a hell of a dancer. Harold lived a full life with great passion for his family, travel, his garden and a good joke! He touched many lives and his presence will be missed. Grandpa's joy for life was transmitted wherever he took his smile. We give thanks for the life of a man who we are proud to call husband, father and grandpa. He was unique, complex and extraordinary and now irreplaceable. Harold is survived by his loving wife of thirty-seven years, his children, nine grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by two grandchildren, Scott Eli and Jeremy Albert. A Memorial Service will be held in the Chapel of MOUNTAIN VIEW FUNERAL HOME on Monday, December 1, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. Arrangements entrusted to MOUNTAIN VIEW FUNERAL HOME and CEMETERY, 1605 - 100 Street S.E. (17 Avenue S.E. and Garden Road), Calgary, AB. Telephone: 403-272-5555. Published in the Calgary Herald from 11/26/2008- 11/30/2008
