BISHOP, Albert Allen Born April 10, 1915, passed away peacefully at home November 26, 2008 at age 93. Albert was raised in Calgary's Sunnyside district and attended Sunnyside Cottage, Sunnyside Bungalow and Crescent Heights High School, graduating in 1932 in the midst of the Depression. With no jobs to be had, Albert attended the electrical program at S.A.I.T., graduating in 1934. Albert joined the City of Calgary Electric System (now ENMAX) in 1935, retiring in 1972. Albert was a leading member of the team which modernized the system to accommodate unprecedented growth during and after WWII. On a leave of absence from the city, Albert served five years in the R.C.A.F. as an aeronautical engineer officer in Canada and overseas, followed by three years at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, graduating in 1949 with distinction. Albert was a life member of the Association of Professional Engineers of Alberta. He enjoyed a lifelong hobby of fishing and boating in remote areas of Alberta, BC, Saskatchewan and Montana. In 1970, he was appointed the first commander of the Calgary Power Squadron, the local chapter of a national organization which promoted safe and competent boating. In retirement, Albert's favorite locations were summer in Calgary, spring and fall at the west coast and winter in Arizona or Mexico. Albert's life was shared with two wonderful women, his first wife of forty years, Myrtle, and his second wife of twenty-four years, Kathleen, who survives him. Between them, Albert will be dearly missed by five children, seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Albert and Kathleen were members of the Prairie Winds Square Dance Club and enjoyed many years of that recreational and social activity. Memorial Services will be held at Varsity Acres Presbyterian Church at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 4. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts to the charity of your choice would be preferred.
