Adret Smith (née Downey) June 09, 1922 - December 11, 2004 Funeral arrangements by Atlantic Funeral Home (Dartmouth) SMITH (Downey), Adret - 82, North Preston, passed away peacefully with her family gathered around her Saturday, December 11, 2004, in Dartmouth General Hospital, Dartmouth. Adret was a daughter of the late Maurice II and Annie (Sparks) Downey (North Preston). She was the beloved wife of the late Donald Smith for 41 years. Together they raised 22 children, while raising her family she found time to do seasonal work which included blueberry picking and Mayflowers, along with traditional making of the Christmas wreaths. Adret was a member of St. Thomas Baptist Church. Adret served her Lord in many ways, by participating in Women's Day Service when called upon, and providing annual treats for the Sunday school during Christmas time. The last surviving sister, Gertrude Mae (Downey) Lucas, Lucasville. Loving mother to sons, Earl (Burlene), Raymond (Josephine), Donald Jr. (Rhoda), Wayne (Wilma), Conrad (Tammy), Brian and Algeron, all of North Preston; Jeffery (Kathy), Peter, Toronto; Andrew (Theresa), Buffalo, New York; Ricardo, Ottawa; daughters, Adret Ena (Leander), Toronto; Adell (Patterson) Downey, Raya, Angel, Jessie (Frederick) Riley, all of Dartmouth; Josephine, Halifax; Wendy (Ginger), Donna, Mary, Tahirah, Lekiesha, all of North Preston; 65 grandchildren; 116 great-grandchildren; 10 great great-grandchildren; God children, Volda Beals, Olive Reid, Sherman Smith; many nieces and nephews. Adret was predeceased by children, Cora, Blair and Michael; brothers, Maurice III, Charles, Garmen, and Hughie; sisters, Annie, Lena, Lottie, Sara, Eliza, and Margaret. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth, visitation will be held 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, December 15, in St. Thomas United Baptist Church, Rev. Wallace Smith officiating. Burial to follow in the church cemetery. Donations in memory to St. Thomas United Baptist Church Building Fund. The family would like to extend their appreciation to the doctors and nurses at Dartmouth General Hospital.
