J. Wendell Murphy SYDNEY, NS - J. Wendell Murphy, age 80, of Sydney and formerly of Charlottetown, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 16, 2004 at his home. Born in Charlottetown, he was the son of the late Henry and Emily (Doiron) Murphy. Wendell grew up in Charlottetown and attended Queen Square School and was a graduate of Prince of Wales College and St Dunstans University, Charlottetown. He was very active in sports which included hockey, tennis and rugby. He was a member of the Royal C.B. Yacht Club and C.N. Pensioners Club, past membership with the Kiwanis Golden K and Rotary Club. He was retired from the Canadian National Railway after 35 years as branch manager of freight sales. A member of the Professional Musicians Association: he played professional trumpet with the same group for 16 years 'The Downtowners' in Charlottetown. He then transferred with C.N. to Halifax for many years and continued his music and then with C.N. to Moncton with the railway and always continued his music. He then transferred to Sydney with C.N. for 32 years until his retirement. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, the former Catherine "Kitty" Crabbe; also by his special nephew, Richard Coffin and wife Carole of Ottawa; and dear friend, Elmer Gallant of Charlottetown. Elmer and Wendell were the last two surviving members of the Downtowners Orchestra. He is also survived by cousins, Marnie and Roy McGonnell of Charlottetown. Wendell was predeceased by his sister, Anna Coffin. Visitation for the late Mr. Murphy will begin at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. The body will be transferred to Hennessey's Funeral Home in Charlottetown where visitation will resume on Monday, December 20, 2004 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral mass for the late Mr. Murphy will take place on Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. at the Most Holy Redeemer Church in Charlottetown, PEI with Rev. Eric Dunn officiating. Interment will follow in Roman Catholic Cemetery, Charlottetown. Reception to follow. Donations to the Canadian Heart & Stroke Association or a charity of choice.
