Born in Melfort, Saskatchewan, Merv was from a family of five brothers and two sisters. His musical family encouraged his interest in playing the trumpet and due to this talent, discipline and work ethic, he was very successful in his musical endeavours. Eventually they were also responsible for outlets in Regina and Melfort. Merv took flying lessons at the Brandon Flying Club and became an IFR-certified pilot to travel more quickly among the stores in the company airplane. Merv continued his trumpet playing, holding orchestra jam sessions in the basement, playing swing tunes for Kiwanis Club speical meetings, and playing in the orchestra for the grandstand shows at the Brandon Summer Fair. In the early 1970's, Merv and Georgia retired to the west coast and enjoyed golfing in Palm Springs in the winter and Richmond, BC, in the summer. They were members of Desert Island Golf Club and Richmond Country Club. Merv will be missed by his wife, Georgia; daughter Barbara (Corry) Dalmaso; son Brian (Michelle) Kraeling; and grandson Charles Kraeling; as well as nieces and nephews, friends and neighbours.
