MANTYNEN, Toini 2009-09-05 Toini Marjatta Mantynen 1926-2009 It is with sadness that we announce that our beloved äiti, Toini Marjatta Mantynen passed away peacefully on September 3, 2009. She was born on March 23, 1926 in Parkano, Finland and immigrated to Canada with her family in 1956. With “sisu” she met and overcame many new challenges; learned a new language and later as a single parent, a new career at St. Joseph‘s Hospital. Aside from work and family she managed to stay active in the Finnish community volunteering for many years with the Finlandia Club, the Multicultural Society, was one of the founding members and the first recording secretary of Suomi Koti. For her years of service she was recognized with an Ontario volunteer award. Äiti also participated in the Finnish theatre group and was a long time member of Oras Choir. She also found time to ski, was an avid walker and was very proud of her three time win in the Royal Lepage Women‘s Run, in the three generation category. We treasure the mittens, socks and memories she created for us. Together with Raune they shared 32 wonderful years together, enjoying their summers with family at their hobby farm in Lappe and warm winters in Florida. In the more recent years illness curtailed the many activities she so much enjoyed, but, true to her nature, never uttered a complaint. In her life time she endured many losses: her second husband, Raune Mantynen in December 2008; son, Tapio Lahteenmaki in February 2004; parents, Edvin and Edla Koivisto; brothers, Aarne, Tauno, Risto and Paavo; sisters, Helmi, Anni, Martha, Raakel, Salme and Elli;and first husband, Eino Lahteenmaki. Äiti will be lovingly remembered by daughters; Pirjo Sutherland (Ralph), Riitta-Liisa Tuomaala (Terry), Marian Begall (Tony Hanson), grandchildren; Sandra Sutherland-Byers (Patrick), David Sutherland (Kerry), Stephen Sutherland (Leanne), Ryan Tuomaala (Anne), Kristy Tuomaala (Robert), Christopher Lahteenmaki, Allison Palmer (Jeffery), Bryan Begall (Mandy) and Peter Begall (Ashley), great-grandchildren Maija Sutherland and Scott Byers, as well as numerous other relatives and friends. A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, September 8, 2009 at 11:00 am in the Sargent and Son Funeral Chapel with Rev. Jari Lahtinen presiding. A private interment will take place at Riverside Cemetery. As expressions of sympathy the family respectfully request memorials to the Alzheimer Society of Thunder Bay or a charity of one‘s choice.
