VISSCHER SCJ, Rev. Adrian The community of the Priests of the Sacred Heart announces the death of their confrere Fr. Adrian Visscher SCJ on July 14 at the age of 78. He was the son of Gerrit Jan Visscher and Petronella van Gennep, brother of Ria (Hans) and Jan. Born in the Netherlands on October 10, 1930, he became a member of the Congregation of the Priests of the Sacred Heart (SCJ) in September 1952 and was ordained a priest in 1957. He came to Canada in 1961 and was the Provincial Superior of the community in English Canada from 1968 to 1974. From 1970 - 1994 he was professor at the Institute of Pastoral Studies at Saint Paul University in Ottawa. From 1994 - 1999, he was the Director of Pastoral Services for the Children's Hospital in Eastern Ontario (CHEO). A new side of Fr. Adrian emerged from his work with the children who were sick: he became a stain glass artist. He encouraged others to use this medium as an expression for their creativity, especially at St. Augustine parish where he served as a week-end assistant for eighteen years. Fr. Adrian was a natural born leader whose insightful, compassionate and decisive heart aligned him with those who were most vulnerable. The community is most grateful to Mrs. Merle Stern, his colleague at Saint Paul, for her friendship and her attentive care especially during Fr. Adrians illness. A special thanks also to the generous care provided by the nursing staff at Elizabeth Bruyre. Friends may pay their respects at St. Augustine Church, 1030 Baseline Road, on Friday, July 17, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A vigil for the deceased will be held at 8 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, July 18, at 11 a.m. in St. Augustine Church. The burial will be at the cemetery at St. John's Church in Enniskerry, following the reception after the Mass of Christian Burial. Published in the Ottawa Citizen from 7/16/2009- 7/17/2009
