Velma Maxine Kane (née Thomas) October 10, 1949 - December 23, 2004 Funeral arrangements by Atlantic Funeral Home (Dartmouth) KANE (Thomas), Velma Maxine - 55. It is with great sadness that the family of Velma Maxine Thomas Kane announces her sudden passing on December 23, 2004. Born in East Preston, Velma was the loving mother of daughter Stephanie, and devoted life partner of husband, Frank Kane. A graduate of the Halifax Regional Vocational School (Community College), Velma continued her education in the Saint Mary's Commerce Department while working full-time with the Bank of Montreal and managing a household. Over her 35 year career with the Bank of Montreal, Velma proved to be a "Trailblazer" within the Financial Services community - being the first black female Bank Branch Manager in Nova Scotia, and one of the few across Canada. Velma was multi-talented and used her skills in the community at large. She was a faithful member of the Victoria Road United Baptist Church for 20 years, where she served on many committees and in groups. Her activities included: Clerk, Treasurer, Sunday School Teacher, member of the Usher Board, Member and Chairperson of the Finance Committee. She was a Board Member for the Nova Scotia Home for Coloured Children; member of the East Preston Red Cross Branch; and Board Member of the George Washington Carver Credit Union. Velma enjoyed spending time having lively conversation with family and friends. Equally, she enjoyed the pleasures of a good book, magazine, computer games or "her stories". A forthright person who valued honesty and never beat around the bush, a generous and giving sister, an aunt whose nephews and nieces will remember her as the best kind of friend, Velma's presence in all of our everyday lives will be forever remembered and sadly missed. Velma Maxine is survived by her husband, Frank; daughter, Stephanie; step-daughter, Vanessa; sisters, Edna (Leonard) Kane, East Preston; Marjorie Thomas (Ottawa); Emily (Fergus) Whyne, New Jersey, USA; Claudia (Allan) Berry, Montreal; brothers, Cyril (Mary), Matthew (Carolyn), and Glendon of East Preston; Ancel (Linda), Dartmouth; Allison and Ivan, Ottawa; many nephews, nieces, cousins and friends. Velma Maxine is predeceased by her mother, Marjorie (Taylor) Thomas; father, Matthew; and granddaughter, Stephanie Shakira. Family, friends and colleagues are invited to attend a celebration of Velma's life. Visitation will be today, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, December 28, in First Baptist Church, 100 Ochterloney St., Dartmouth. Officiating will be Rev. Sherrolyn Riley, assisted by Rev. Elias Mutale and Rev. Dr. Donald E. Fairfax. Interment will be in East Preston United Baptist Church Cemetery. A repast will be held in the Atlantic Funeral Home following the burial.
