Captain Harry Arthur Richardson July 01, 1938 - December 28, 2004 Funeral arrangements by Sands Funeral Chapel (Victoria) Captain Harry Arthur Richardson, B.C.C.P., Ret’d. Born July 1, 1938 in Detroit, Michigan. Died December 28, 2004 in Victoria, BC. Passed away peacefully with his wife at his side. Raised in James Bay, Harry had a love for the sea. At 16 he took his first job as a mess boy on the MV Marabelle and later the S.S. Sudbury. Throughout his career he worked for Victoria Tug, Island Tug and Barge, Seaspan International and ultimately he became a British Columbia Coast Pilot. After 47 years at sea Captain Harry, a.k.a. “The Candy Man” retired. His other love was the desert heat, spending the last 12 years of his “off” time in Yuma, AZ. In January 2002 Harry was diagnosed with cancer and his courageous struggle began. Throughout this time he was able to maintain an enormous sense of humor, giving family and friends the courage to deal with this terrible disease. Harry is predeceased by his mother and father Gladys Estensen and Harry Richardson. He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Leni. Children: Michael (Lorenda) Richardson of Campbell River; Cathy (Keith) Waters, and Dan (Susan) Richardson of Victoria. Grandchildren: Carilyne (Jody) Hotel, Kyle, Travis, Jared, Melissa and Katrina Richardson, Trevver and Terrissa Mould, Tyler and Saira Waters, Matt Richardson and Patricia Nadeau. Great-grandchildren: Josh and Kaylee Hunt, Madison Hotel. He is also survived by his brother Ed (Mary) Holden; nieces: Janie (Dave) Cadsand, Nina (Bill) Ritchie, and Linda (Don) Dorman; sister-in-law Cheri (Ray) Rice. Uncles and aunts Art, John, Edie Davies and Betty Barnes; numerous cousins in Canada and the US. He will also sadly be missed by his traveling companions and best friends Bruce and Terry McDonald of Parksville, the Ancient Mariners Coffee Gang and his many workmates. The Captain has left the bridge. The family is grateful for the kind support and expertise of the doctors, nurses and volunteers at Victoria Hospice. Memorial Service will be held in the Sands Funeral Chapel, 1803 Quadra Street, Victoria, BC on Monday, January 3, 2005 at 1:00 p.m. Refreshments will follow the Service in the Sands Arbor Reception Centre. Cremation entrusted to Hatley Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, and on behalf of his granddaughter, Melissa Richardson, the family would appreciate donations be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Association, c\o Canadian Diabetes Association, 276 – 2950 Douglas Street, Victoria, BC V8T 4N4.
