R. "Smitty" Ambrose Smith - August 12, 1927 - July 31, 2004 - It is with deep sorrow that the family announces the death of Ambrose "Smitty" Smith, age 77, Hammonds Plains, on July 31, 2004, in the Palliative Care Unit, VG Site, QEII, with his family at his side. Born August 12, 1927, in Canso, he was a son of the late William and Annie (Feltmate) Smith. He worked for Farmer's Dairy for 26 years and also worked as a Stevedore. For 39 years he was an active member of the Hammonds Plains Volunteer Fire Department. He held positions as chief, deputy chief, was honored with a life membership from the fire department and also a member of the Maritime Fire Chiefs Association. He was active in the community for many years and a hard worker all his life. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. Surviving are his loving wife of 44 years, June (Powell); daughters, Kim Smith (Rob Patey), Enfield; Darlene (Tony) Peters, Riverview, N.B.; grandchildren, Kayla and Cory; brother, Lester (Roz), Halifax; sister, Mae, Sackville; several nieces, nephews and cousins; mother-in-law, Alice Powell, Cape Breton; sister-in-law, Marlyn (Bobby), Cape Breton; Aunt Mandy, Canso. He will be sadly missed by his buddy and pal, his dog Misty. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Wednesday with memorial service 2 p.m. Thursday, Rev. Bill Woodworth officiating, both in Atlantic Funeral Home, 125 Sackville Dr., Lower Sackville. Burial in Oakridge Memory Gardens followed by a reception in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Canadian Cancer Society, the Palliative Care Unit, VG Site, QEII, or a charity of choice.
