Elsie Schaafsma, 82 ATHENS -- Elsie Schaafsma, 82, of Athens, died at the Maple View Lodge in Athens December 2 after several months of failing health. She was born Elsie Eelktje Tiekstra on July 27, 1922 in Grootegast, Netherlands to parents Wolter Tiekstra and the former Barbertje van der Velde, where she was raised and educated. She went to night school and learned about the farming trades and worked on various farms in Holland. She also worked in a grocery store. She met her husband Doede Schaafsma is 1943 when her belt broke on her suitcase and he stopped to help her. They were married May 1, 1945. While her husband served as a volunteer in the military serving in Indonesia, Mrs. Schaafsma raised the three children they had in Holland at this time. They emigrated to Canada in 1952, moving to the Brockville area. Since 1956, she worked as a farmer's wife, helping out with the farm chores as well as raising their eight children. She retired from farming in 1976 shortly after her husband's death and moved to Athens. Mrs. Schaafsma and her husband were the founding members of the Athens Christian Reformed Church and she was an active member of the Athens Women's Institute and the Athenia Senior Citizens Club. In her early years she was a member of the Athens Christian Reformed Church Choir. Knitting and crocheting were two of her greatest passions in life. Even after losing her eyesight several years ago, she continued to crochet and knit afghans and blankets for her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and the Athens Ministerial for their hampers at Christmas. It was not uncommon for her to apologize for a delay in these treasured gifts due to a dropped stitch, never mentioning her blindness. Mrs. Schaafsma is survived by her eight children, Albert (Lois) of Winchester, Walter (Freda) of Athens, Allan (Ella) of Oakleaf, Wayne (Shirley) of Athens, Donald (Cathy) of Athens, James (Sherry) of Seeley's Bay, Audrey (Don) of Maberly and Barbarra (Robert) of Montreal. She is also survived by her two brothers Kees (Appie) of Athens, Geert (Janny) of the Netherlands, her sisters Aafke van der Veen (Willie) and Harmke Marinus, both of the Netherlands, and her brother-in-law Henk Postma of Holland. She is survived by 17 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Schaafsma was predeceased by her husband Doede Schaafsma who passed away December 23, 1975 and her son Donald Jr. who died at nine months of age in 1962. She was predeceased by her parents Wolter and Barbertje, her brother-in-law Meindert Marinus of Holland, sister Lien Postma of Holland and brother Rein Tiekstra and his wife Geertje of Holland. Friends called at the Judson Funeral Home in Athens on December 3. The funeral was held at the Athens Christian Reformed Church December 4, with Rev. Gary van Leeuwen officiating. Her pallbearers were grandsons Clark Schaafsma, Tim Schaafsma, Anthony Schaafsma, Paul Schaafsma, Bryan Schaafsma and Matthew Schaafsma. Memorial donations were made to the Athens Christian Reformed Church Building fund and the Maple View Lodge Auxiliary.
