In 1951 the family immigrated to Canada. Walter practiced family medicine in rural Manitoba. He studied psychiatry and practiced at the Selkirk Mental Hospital from 1964 until his retirement in 1995. Walter had many interests: he loved music, playing his violins and singing with the Polish Sokal Choir, and performing with the hospital band. He loved nature, snowshoeing, kayaking and fishing. He spoke many languages and was greatly fond of aboriginal culture. Walter loved the company of his family and many friends.
