GARNETT, JAMES OSCAR - at the Saint John Regional Hospital on February 18, 2004 with his loving wife of 42 years, Thelma, by his side. James slipped peacefully away after a year of struggling with renal failure. James Oscar Garnett of Garnett Settlement was born in Saint John, March 21, 1918. He worked at the Saint John Dry Dock for 10 years as a riveter/welder. During the war he built gun turrets and water tanks, they said he was too valuable to send overseas. James was also in the pulp business for several years and owned Garnett's Auto Salvage and liked to rebuild old cars like new. James also enjoyed playing the guitar and singing, he even made his own tapes. Survived by his wife Thelma Maxine (Hamilton) Garnett, two sons Allan James (Donna), James Thomas (Marilyn); three daughters Mary Christina, Patricia Catherine, and Amber Dawn; three brothers Percy (Ruth), Curtis (June), Kenneth (Pearl); three sisters Greta Logan, Bessie (George) Wilson, Bernice (Ronald) Cook, also survived by five grandsons, three granddaughters, three great grandchildren, several great great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. James was predeceased by his parents Allan Edward Garnett and Maude (Whiteneck) and brothers Beverly and Walter, sisters Fay and Lottie. Resting at the A.W. Cavanagh Funeral Home, 91 Leinster Street (634-1712) with visitation on Friday 2-4 and 7-9p.m. The funeral service will be held in the Cavanagh's Chapel on Saturday at 11a.m. Burial will be held in the spring at a date to be announced. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Kidney Foundation or a charity of the donors choice.
