ELLIS, Gerald E. 5th Canadian Armoured Division, Royal Canadian Signal Division 1919-2004 A Prairie boy has finally gone home on Friday 17 December 2004 after a long trip away. Gerald (Gerry) left Miami, Manitoba to fight for his country through Italy, France, Belgium and Holland. After VE day he volunteered to join the campaign in Japan but was spared by the cessation of hostilities. He continued to serve his country as a constable of the RCMP Security Service during the Gouzenko era in Toronto and Ottawa. Marriage with the love of his life, Norma Jean, was followed by another chapter of service to Canada, this time with the RCAF, serving in the Special Investigations Unit in Ottawa and 1 Air Division, Metz, France during the height of the Cold War. Retirement from the Air Force saw twenty years with the federal government, first at the Queens Printer, and then Dept of Supply and Services until his retirement at age 67. Born in Altamont, Manitoba on February 4, 1919, son of the late John Ellis and Rose Ellis (Snowden) predeceased by brothers Harvey and Raymond and sister Doris. Beloved husband of Norma Ellis (Macleod), father of Patrick (Sandie), Ottawa and Jamie (Joanne), Halifax. Very proud grandfather of Gavin, Meghan, Maclean and Patrick. Gerry faced life and his death with courage, humour and stoicism. He loved his family and his country and should best be remembered for his concern for others before himself. The family will greet friends at The Tubman Funeral Home Garden Chapel, 3440 Richmond Road, Nepean, on Monday December 20th, 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held in the Chapel Tuesday December 21st at 11:00 a.m. followed with a reception. Inurnment will be held at the National Military Cemetery in the presence of immediate family on Wednesday. Heartfelt thanks to all of the staff at the Queensway Carleton Hospital that helped Gerry and his family during his final days. In lieu of flowers, in memoriam donations may be sent to the Canadian Cancer Society. Published in the Ottawa Citizen from 12/18/2004 - 12/20/2004.
