Ph.D Born September 9, 1930 in New Glasgow, N.S., died February 20, 2002, Ottawa, Ontario as the result of an accidental fall. Son of Lt. Col. C.D. Sampson and his wife Barbara (McKelvie), brother of Anita Latham (Don), (New Glasgow, N.S.); David (Joyce), (St. Stephen, N.B.) and Kenneth (Fredericton, N.B.). Beloved husband of Joan (McGowan) and father of Margaret and Elizabeth (Jan de Pater); adored Grandpa of Dylan, Dexter and Ava de Pater. Dexter grew up in Westville, N.S., and was a graduate of Acadia and Harvard Universities. His entire professional career was as a Research Scientist with Agriculture Canada, specializing in plant breeding. There he developed several varieties of ornamental shrubs before working with cereal crops, specializing in winter wheat. He retired in 1990, but continued to work as an Honorary Research Associate. He was active in the Society of Sigma Xi, the Harvard Club of Ottawa, the Ottawa Network of Sculptors, the Ottawa Buddhist Society, the Group of 78 and a number of professional organizations. Dexter was a gifted sculptor in stone, a lover of nature, a spelunker and a skilled genealogist. Friends may visit at the West Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 150 Woodroffe Avenue at Richmond Road on Sunday, February 24 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., and are invited to a Memorial Service on Monday, February 25 at St. Paul's Presbyterian Church, 971 Woodroffe Avenue at 11 a.m. Flowers are gratefully declined, but donations may be made in Dexter's memory to the Friends of the Central Experimental Farm, Bldg. 72, Central Experimental Farm, Ottawa, ON., or the charity of your choice.
