Suddenly at his home in Barrie, Ontario, on Monday, April 1, 2002, William Jay Hitchins, in his 55th year. Jay leaves his beloved wife, Mary Frances; their sons Thomas Chadwick and Joseph Arthur Hitchins, both of Smiths Falls and his buddy Shaxi. He was born April 21, 1947, the son of Dorothy Hitchins of Smiths Falls and the late Arthur Hitchins. He is also survived by his brother Lee (Barbara), nieces and nephews, Bev Hitchins, Jodi Drummond, Kyana Hitchins, Adam Cousins and their families, and extended family members Alan Walker (Joan), Bill Hitchins (Nancy) and Cindy Hitchins (Ray). Mourning as well are Lindsay Spencer, Jay's sisters-in-law Patricia Bjorgan (Dale), Catharine Manson (Larry), Elizabeth McGuire (Frank Eggins), Cecelia McGuire (John Kalbfleisch), Teresa Linton (Robert), nieces and nephews Melissa Kuchma (Bill), Gillian Manson (Trevor Saker), Tricia Brydges (Michael), Kristofer Bjorgan (Christine Oakes), Matthew Manson, Tess Linton (Andrew Willby), Katie Eggins, Francie Cameron (Ian), Rachel Eggins, Laura Bjorgan, Krystina Eggins and their children Molly Kuchma, Jacob Kuchma and Emma Brydges. Jay was a 31 year police veteran, serving mainly with the Ottawa Force; since 1998, he was on special assignment at Provincial Police Headquarters in Orillia. He was intensely devoted to his friends, to his colleagues at work and to his family, above all to his wife, sons and mother. The room always lit up when he walked in and glowed long after he left. Friends may pay their respects at the Blair & Son Funeral Home, Smiths Falls, on Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Francis de Sales Church, Smiths Falls, on Monday, April 8, at 11 a.m. In remembrance, donations to the Easter Seals Society (Post Polio Research) or the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated.
