O.C., D.S.C., B.A., LL.D, D.S.L. Former President and later Chairman of Southam Inc. Died at his Toronto home, on Thursday, May 9, 2002, at the age of 92. Eldest son of the late St. Clair Balfour and Ethel May Southam of Hamilton, Ontario, he is survived by his wife of 69 years, Helen Gifford (Staunton). He is also survived by his daughter, Lisa Balfour Bowen (Walter), his son, St. Clair IV, all of Toronto, and two grandchildren, Arabella Bowen of New York City and Staunton Bowen of London, England, his brother William Balfour of Ancaster, Ontario and two sisters, Wilson Baxter of Hamilton and Elizabeth Campbell (John) of Black Diamond, Alberta. He was predeceased by his sisters, Joan McColl and Alice Mary Glassco. The family thanks the Hospice Palliative Care NETwork Project, Calea Palliative Care, and the medical teams at the Toronto Hospital and Princess Margaret Hospital, including Dr. Howard Abrams, Dr. Andrea Bezjak, Dr. Russell Goldman, Dr. Jonathan Irish, Dr. Albert Kirshen, Dr. Robert Richardson, Dr. Frances Shepherd and Dr. John Trachtenberg. Special thanks also to Graciela Guercio and her team of caregivers at his home. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, May 14, 2002 at ST.
