William HERD

February 5, 1913-May 10, 2002. We say goodbye to a true gentleman. His quick wit, generosity and love of life touched all who knew him, even in his last days. William (Bill) Herd died on Friday, May 10, 2002 at the Ottawa Hospital, General Campus, in his 90th year. Devoted husband for 61 years of Eleanor (Gregory) Herd. Beloved father of two sons, Richard and wife Barbara (Ottawa), and Robert and wife Sharon (Burnaby, B.C. Joyfully remembered by four grandsons, Christopher and wife Emily (Houston, Texas), Alexander (Lexington, Kentucky), Jeremy and Graeme (Burnaby, B.C.). Survived by sisters Jean Cole (Ninette, Manitoba) and Annabelle Klein (Pleasantville, New York). Fondly remembered by sister-in-law Betty and husband Bill Gansler (Sarnia, Ontario) and sister-in-law Mollie Gregory (widow of George) (Nanaimo, B.C.) and by many nieces and nephews. Cremation in Ottawa will be followed by a memorial service in the A. W. Miles Chapel, Humphrey Funeral Home, 1403 Bayview Avenue, Toronto, at 10:00 a.m. Sunday, May 26, 2002, followed by interment at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Section 34, Plot 245 at 11:00 a.m. (enter main entrance off Mount Pleasant Avenue). Bill was born in Glasgow, Scotland to William Herd and Mary Cowan Moyes, and emigrated to Peterborough, Ontario as an infant. He was apprenticed at the Canadian General Electric Company, then worked as a draftsman for the Trane Company (Toronto) and English Electric Company (St. Catharines). During WW II, Bill's skills with precision drawings were utilized by Research Enterprises. After six months post-war with the Eastman Kodak Company, he laboured for R.P. Allsop and Associates, Consulting Engineers, until his first retirement in 1977. From 1978 to 1990, Bill contracted his services and expertise as a veteran specification writer to Angus Engineering (Toronto) and Stevenson, Raines (Calgary). Bill and Eleanor returned East to Ottawa in June 2001. Bill missed attending the Calgary Stampede for the first time in 11 years.
